Dishwasher drainage depends on the sink-side installation
GE's troubleshooting guidance specifically points to the high drain loop and disposer connection because the dishwasher does not discharge into an isolated system. It normally shares part of the kitchen drain path. A new disposer whose dishwasher knockout was never removed can produce an immediate no-drain symptom even though the dishwasher itself is fine.
Likewise, a slow sink, clogged air gap, or badly routed hose can restrict discharge. Those are installation or plumbing faults, not pump failures.
Do not use household drain cleaner in the dishwasher
GE explicitly says not to use drain cleaner in a dishwasher. The machine contains pumps, seals, hoses, metals, and plastics that are not the same as a simple household drain pipe, and caustic chemicals can create both equipment and exposure hazards during later service.
A hum, silence, and normal pump sound are different clues
If the drain command produces a normal pump sound but water barely moves, restriction is still plausible. A pump that hums but cannot move may be jammed or failing. No pump activity can involve power, control, wiring, or the pump itself. The sound changes the diagnostic direction but does not justify reaching into an energized machine.
